Before we wrap up today I was hoping we could touch on your philosophy of living an inspired life. Some people scoff at the idea of inspiration being a key component to success and happiness, but you’ve written a 450-page book on the subject. What do you mean by “living an inspired life”?

Rohn

When I was growing up I had the benefit of being inspired by my faith—inspired by spirituality—thanks to my parents. They lived such a unique, inspiring life that I picked up on that. I remember early thinking, “Wow, I would like to be like them.”

I’ve also been inspired by associations that I’ve had where the work others did, coupled with mine, created something unique. I’m inspired by possibilities. One of my business colleagues said, “If we do this right we can make a major contribution to the lives of millions of people.” I thought, “Wow! I’m inspired by that.” I never had a chance, up until my association with those people, to think I had a chance to make a contribution to millions of people’s lives, but sure enough, it turned out to be possible. It turned out to be one of those unique things.

I’m inspired by what I do. For me the story never gets old, especially in business. At the age of twenty-five I met this extraordinary man who never went beyond the ninth grade in school. He never finished high school, never went to college or university, but he inspired me to know I could make changes in my life that would last forever. He inspired me to realize that one day I could be a person of reputation, that my success would create some honor and respect for myself. That turned out to be true. He said, “I promise you, Mr. Rohn, if you’ll keep working like you’re working now, developing your communication skills and all that, one of these days before walk into a room to speak, you’ll hear someone say, “That’s him; that’s that famous man!” Back then I thought, “Well, that could never happen for me.”

Of the seven countries I just visited, the last one was Mexico. I just got back two days ago. I had an audience of about 2,000. Sure enough, as I walked in to get ready to make my presentation I heard someone say, “That’s him; that’s the famous man!” It just rang in my head from all those years ago when I was twenty-five years old (which was fifty years ago), my mentor had said, “This is going to happen if you keep growing and learning and challenging yourself to get better.” I thought, “Wow! Here it is; it’s happened to me!” That’s inspiring.

What’s also really inspiring is when your name appears in somebody’s testimonial. “Here’s the person who found me. Here’s the person who got me started. Here’s the person who wouldn’t let me quit or who gave me more reasons for staying than for leaving. Here’s the person who believed in me until I could believe in myself.
